Those we love don't go away, They walk beside us every day, unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed and very dear. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal." Abelardo Parcero Alinaya, affectionately known as Aveling or Al, was called home to be with Jesus Christ and entered into Eternal Peace on February 22, 2015 at the age of 84, surrounded by his loving family. Abelardo was born on July 6, 1930 in Binakayan (Aplaya), Kawit, Cavite, Philippines to Felipe Alinaya and Victoria Parcero. He was the youngest of six children. Abelardo attended Binakayan Elementary School and Kawit High School, where he graduated in 1950, receiving certificates for General Curriculum and Woodworking. Following high school, Abelardo attended the Manila Trade School specializing in Construction. Wanting to provide a better life for his family, at the age of 23, Abelardo enlisted in the United States Navy on June 29, 1954 at Naval Station Sangley Point, Cavite. He completed the USN Basic Training at the US Naval Training Center, San Diego (Company 210). Before long, Abelardo's natural talent and exceptional skills as a carpenter and builder became evident to his superiors. Abelardo was appointed Builder (Light). His military career included service on several vessels and shore duty stations with US Naval Mobile Construction Battalions. During his military career, Abelardo received several certificates and awards amongst which were National Defense Service Medals, the Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Silver Star and 2 Bronze Stars, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and six (6) Good Conduct Awards and Medals. Abelardo's service in Vietnam resulted in a Letter of Commendation for his "outstanding performance of arduous duties in a hostile environment under constant threat of Viet Cong terrorist attacks" while serving with the Public Works Department, US Naval Support Activity, Saigon Vietnam from 18 May 1968 to 15 May 1969. Abelardo proudly served the United States Navy for over 20 years, retiring on January 12, 1974. Letters of Commendation acknowledged that Abelardo "consistently produced finished products that were indicative of a skilled craftsman." Not one to sit idle, Abelardo began a second career with the Ventura County Superintendent of Schools Maintenance Department where his resourcefulness and skills were utilized. It was quite common for Abelardo to take furniture discards and failed equipment, and repaired them to better-than-new condition. After nearly 20 years, he retired for the second time on January 3, 1993. Never boastful but very humble, his family only learned of his work contributions at his retirement luncheon. Abelardo (known as "Ali" at work), was respected as a hard-working, reliable, responsible, conscientious and dedicated employee. His co-workers acknowledged his near perfect attendance record and praised his good nature, patience and attention to detail. Most importantly, Abelardo dedicated his life to his family. Over the years, we learned he was a man of immense and generous love who only wished a better life for his family, than his humble beginnings from the little fishing village in the Philippines where his family's livelihood was dependent on the availability and accessibility of fish. He sponsored several of his siblings to immigrate to the US, and did not hesitate to assist his nephews and nieces financially, physically and emotionally. Growing up, Abelardo was a strict, stern man of quiet resolve and discipline. He was a fantastic Dad and Grandfather who set a great example through his works and love of family. Abelardo took immense pride and adored his grandchildren. He even helped to raise them, giving all his love and devotion. His greatest joy was time spent with them. He was an active part of their lives including babysitting, chauffeuring them to/from school, hosting family parties, attending all their performances and games, and filming their every move. His grandchildren and great-granddaughters will forever miss their "Pops" their "Lolo" and his unconditional love. He also enjoyed being outdoors, cooking, bowling, gardening, fishing, dancing, and loved to entertain and throw the best barbeques, where no one was a stranger and you were always welcome! Abelardo was known for helping others, having a good time and ensuring everybody else was having a good time too! He could brighten any room with his smile and infectious laugh. He lived a simple yet meaningful life and will be greatly missed, but we will forever honor his wonderful life and incredible spirit. May he rest in peace. Abelardo leaves to mourn his passing - his wife of 57 years, Rosabina, his son, Abelardo Jr (Laura), and daughters - Rosabel and Alicia; nine grandchildren - Eric (Carmela), Josephine Estrada (Danny), Michael Pena, Desiree Wallen (fiance, Nick Palmer), Alexandria Wallen, Matthew, Richard Craig, Thomas Wallen and Jonah Lopez; six great-granddaughters - Maia Rose, Malia Maxine and Malina Justice; twins, Victoria Marie and Lorelai Desiree Pena; and Leah Isabelle; several nieces and nephews, extended family members; and numerous friends. He was preceded in death by his son, Roderick, his parents, and all his siblings (three brothers and two sisters). Our world will never be the same -- we have lost a great man, but we celebrate that he will live in our hearts forever. The love which surrounded our Dad as he went to rest with the Lord was evident in every face and voice he struggled to see and hear, especially in the last 12 hours. We are forever grateful for the compassionate care, love and prayers bestowed on our father. His strength and dignity in quietly battling severely debilitating and painful ailments, were a true testament to the brave fighter and kind of person he was. As our family grieves, our solace rests in knowing that he is no longer in pain.
