Monty Montgomery was called home by God on 12 January 2015. He was ninety one. Monty was born in Bernie, Missouri in 1924, to John Silas and Tara Lee Montgomery. He was the fourth of ten children, Lola, Garfield, Hollis, Bob, Breman, Paul, Bill, "Sam", "Bean", and Joanne. Monty met Bonnie in St. Louis, Missouri and were married in Pickett, Arkansas on 31 January 1948. During their sixty seven year marriage, they had two children, Georgia Lee and Mark Montgomery. They have one grandson, Zarcoff Boutell. Monty joined the US Navy in 1942 and received an honorable discharge in 1970. Over these years in a variety of responsible positions throughout the Pacific from World War II through Vietnam. He was assigned to the newly formed "Seabees" in 1942 and contributed in building roads and airfields in Guadalcanal, Bougainville and the Philippine Islands during World War II. After the War, he was Supervisor of Transportation and Dispatchers at Guam and of scraper and shovel crews during the construction of NAS Cubi Pt. Later he served as Alpha Company Chief for MCB Ten and Four and Transportation Chief in Yokosuka, Japan. He completed two tours of duty in Vietnam and ended his military career as a Senior Chief Petty Officer in Port Hueneme, CA. Monty became the manager of the CBC Bowling alley and later worked at Wagon Wheel Bowling alley until his "second" retirement. Along with his wife, Bonnie, he worked for Lexus of Oxnard, delivering and picking up customer's cars as part of a maintenance program. Prior to his "third" retirement, Monty and Bonnie received an award at the end of their ten year employment for driving over 1 million miles moving vehicles between San Diego and Paso Robles, CA. Monty enjoyed doing math, helping others, bowling and riding motorcycles (including a long trip to California on his Indian with a broken leg!) He did not like reading fiction books, watching TV or going to the movies. The only movie we can remember him seeing was "Star Wars - Return of the Jedi" in 1983 because he could not refuse when asked to be taken by his grandson. Nobody could get him to use the drive thru at any restaurant, including his favorite, McDonalds. My Dad was wonderful, generous, kind, soft spoken, stubborn, loyal, dependable, great husband to my Mom, dedicated grandfather, frustrating at times, smart, funny, hardworking man with a beautiful smile and a million other traits that made him so special to everyone that knew him. We will all miss him very much. A burial service will be held at 1:00 in the afternoon on Saturday 24 January, 2015 at Conejo Mountain Memorial Cemetery, 2052 Howard Rd., Camarillo. - See more at: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/venturacountystar/obituary.aspx?n=gilbert-leon-montgomery&pid=173882820&fhid=10348#sthash.aq7VMtE4.dpuf
