
Martin, known to family and friends as "Marty", was born January 30, 1929 in Piru, CA to Refugio and Refugia (Enriquez) Martinez. He grew up in Piru and attended Fillmore High School. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, during which time he was assigned to the U.S.S. Breckinridge and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He married Josie (Escamilla) on January 29, 1950, and had three children. He worked for the federal government in the Public Works Department at the Point Mugu Naval Air Station for 35 years, and retired in 1996.
Marty had a true gift for striking up conversations and making new friends anywhere and everywhere he went. He did not know the definition of a "stranger", and those who knew him can attest he was a warm, generous, inquisitive soul who loved interacting with others and learning new things, as well as a talented storyteller with a sharp sense of humor. He was a proud veteran and greatly enjoyed watching war movies. He also loved gardening, hiking, and the outdoors in general. His friendly, helpful personality, kind spirit, and hilarious stories will be dearly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his youngest sister, Katie Pillado. He is survived by his remaining sisters Lupe Ponce of Fillmore and Carmen Quijada of Piru; his wife of 64 years, Josie; their children Ron Martinez of Ventura, and Susan (Martinez) Bramlett and Larry Martinez of Oxnard; two grandchildren, Melissa (Bramlett) Wagner (husband Jeff) ,and Gary Bramlett of Oxnard; two great-grandchildren, Clio and Elias Wagner of Oxnard; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Viewing and visitation will be at Funeraria Del Angel Conrad's and James Reardon chapel on 401 W. Channel Islands Blvd, Oxnard, on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 from 3 pm. to 8 pm. Funeral Mass will be at St. Anthony's Church, 2511 S. "C" St., Oxnard, on Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at 10 am. Reception is to follow at Funeraria Del Angel Conrad's and James Reardon.
