Eugene Wesley Bacon

Eugene W. Bacon, 91, of Palm Bay, FL, died Monday, January 14, 2013. He was born June 14, 1921, in Flint, Michigan, to Walter and Hazel Bacon. He graduated from Montrose (MI) High School in 1937. He attended Baker Business College and worked as a skilled tradesman for General Motors until his retirement in 1976.

Eugene moved to Texas upon his retirement from General Motors with his wife Catherine and four youngest children. In 1985 he moved from Texas to Palm Bay, FL, with Catherine and his youngest child. He served as a minister in the Community of Christ church for many years.

During his lifetime Eugene enjoyed baseball, especially the Detroit Tigers. He loved old movies, particularly Sherlock Holmes with Basil Rathbone; Charlie Chan mysteries, and any western, particularly those starring John Wayne. His favorite television series was the Andy Griffith Show.

Eugene was an avid reader. Some of his favorite topics were geography and history. He read many other genres including westerns and mysteries, but by far his favorite author was Edgar Rice Burroughs and his favorite series was Tarzan.

Eugene took pleasure in teaching and reading to his children when they were young, but took particular pleasure giving them lessons on the billiard table. Above all else, after his family, his greatest love was Euchre.

He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Catherine; 9 children: Jane, Doug, David, Barbara, Duane, Eugene Jr., Gary, Marilyn and Donald; and his sister, Joanne, of MI. His legacy includes 24 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two infant daughters, one great-granson, and his brother.

Funeral services will be Friday (1/18) at 3:00 PM in the Fountainhead Funeral Chapel with Pastor Jim Cooper and Evangelist Charlie Brown officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 1:00 PM until time of services.
