Born in Bamboo Lane, Clarendon on May 28, 1933 to Rodolf Popley and Testlyn White, the life of Mavis Adassa Brown was made remarkable by her willingness to facilitate the success of her family and those around her. Mavis took pride in being an incredibly hard worker and someone who was dedicated to whatever goal she set for herself. Mavis drove others to work as hard as she did because, for her, that was the surest path to success. Her only respite was her conviction and her belief in salvation through Jesus
Christ.
As a young woman, Mavis met and married Sylvester Brown. They moved from Jamaica to New York in 1970 where they settled in Flushing before buying a home in
Cambria Heights a few years later. The two were married for 52 years until his passing in 2010.
On arrival in New York, Mavis enrolled in a nursing assistant training and quickly found a job once her training was complete. She worked at Long Island Jewish Hospital until retiring in 1998.
On retirement she moved to Palm Bay, Florida where she met many new friends and continued even in retirement to do what she could to help others and even took part-time
jobs, just to stay busy.
A devout member of the Jamaica SDA church in New York and later the Palm Bay SDA church, Mavis was a constant in church on Sabbath morning. She would arrive well before Sabbath School and always had a special place picked out once she found a class that she liked.
Mavis is survived by her children, Monica, Doreen, and Dexton; her loving siblings Novlett, Edward and Lebert; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends.
