Spoke to Pat Sullivan last week. He did not realize that I lived so close to Sebastian Inlet, Florida. Otherwise i would have been there for the service. Colleen, God Bless You & Your Family!

Rick was indeed a special person.  He had more compassion for his fellow workers than anyone else I knew.  Rick was not afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve and stand up to adversity.  He shed his own tears for everyone he worked with.  I am sure he had to be and is a great Dad!  Judy Stang

Gone too soon.....My memories of Rick Hershberger while working 30+ years for the IRCSB will always stand tall. He was a good listener, (and talker), collaborator, and problem solver.  Rick "cared" for all of us working long, hard hours behind the scenes preparing and maintaining our facilities for teaching and learning.  Our Community has been blessed  with Rick.  Peace to him and all those who love him.

Please accept my sincere sympathy at the loss of Rick.  He will be missed by many.  As a former school principal in Indian River County, Rick was quick to answer a call for assistance.  When he came to the campus, he always stopped in the office for a quick visit and to check on the status of the facility and any needs I might have.  Beachland Elementary is a beautiful campus...in part because of Rick's help and suggestions.  He always brought a smile to my face! Rick was a pillar of strenght. Wether it was family problems,hurricances,work,or just lifes issues,he was there. Rick was a problem solver. He will be greatly missed. My sincere sympathy is with his family.

I knew Rick as a school district employee for all my time in Indian River County.  Early in my career he was know to me as the guy who would be called upon when a real problem arose and needed fixing.  He would arrive and very shortly after, there would be a make sense remedy that everyone would buy into, the plan set forward, and problem solved.  Though I did not know Rick socially, I am sure he was the same way with family and friends... someone who could always be depended on, and a problem solver if ever the cards fell short.  When I became an administrator and principal of a school, Rick became much more important to me in the profession.  When I was opening Storm Grove Middle School, there was so much red tape that we were not sure that the school facility would be ready for students on the first day.  The talk was that the superintendent at the time would need to delay opening.  Folks in the district called Rick to action, I believe informally and behind the red tape.  Rick was the one guy that could access and influence everything and everyone in the district, and know exactly what needed to be done and how.  For me, he was there and we would walk the school in those critical weeks and he would share what he had coming in and what was being done to assure me that the school would be ready for kids.  I would see him at the site all hours, before anyone else arrived, late in the evening, and on weekends too.  The new school opened smoothly.  
That was Rick... passionate, determined, reliable, problem solving, and very possibly the hardest worker our school district has ever seen!
For you Rick...

Rick always told me that he made decisions regarding the safety and security of our schoolchildren, with his own children in mind.  He would say, "I would want this for my kids, Chuck". Rick was always soft spoken, even though he had a deep voice, here at the School District. I agree with all the others who have said he would do his best to handle whatever problem needed to be solved. He was all about his children and grandchildren.  You are all in my prayers. What a legacy he left in his family!

My heart is saddened to learn of this loss. Rick was always a friendly, strong, protector at DODGERTOWN. I always knew he was just a phone call away. He will be missed. Prayers of comfort to his family.

Rick Hershbrger, gentle giant, with much to offer. From the ball games with our kids, to our children's relationships, the grandchildren we share, Rick was always kind to me, my daughter, and family, way before we shared a grandaughter.  My kind of man. Told it like it was with a deep voice and half smile. Much love goes out from my heart to ALL of the Hershberger children, grandchildren, and family. I am lifting all of you up in prayer for comfort, peace, and strength from our Heavenly Father.

Rick Hershberger: a gentle giant.. a loving father, grandfather and friend. A man who had a big grizzly bear voice, who was really  soft spoken.  He was helpful, caring and kind whenever called upon, always willing to help if he could.  He will be greatly missed for so many reasons.
