Sarah G. Howard

14 April, 1936 – 25 February, 2026
IN THE CARE OF

Alleva Funeral Home, Inc.

Sarah G. Howard, 89, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, surrounded by her devoted husband of 68 years and her loving family.

Born on April 14, 1936, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Sarah’s early years were marked by adventure and change as her family relocated several times. She spent much of her childhood in Baltimore, Maryland, where she attended Roland Park Country School. It was there, at just 15 years old, that she met the love of her life, James “Jim” A. Howard, at a school dance — the beginning of a remarkable partnership that would span nearly seven decades.

While Jim served in the United States Army, Sarah began her college education at Northwestern University. After Jim’s discharge and enrollment at the University of Maryland, Sarah transferred there as well, and the two proudly graduated together — a testament to the shared determination and lifelong teamwork that defined their marriage.

Sarah devoted her professional life to education. A lifelong special education teacher, she began her career in the Tredyffrin-Easttown School District before dedicating nearly 40 years to the Devereux Foundation. Even after retirement, her passion for helping children never waned; she returned to public schools as a tutor and specialist. Sarah ran her classroom with firm expectations, unwavering structure, and deep compassion. Her students thrived under her “tough but loving” guidance, and many carried her lessons with them long after leaving her classroom.

Beyond her professional work, Sarah faithfully served as a Sunday school teacher at the churches she attended, nurturing the spiritual growth of countless children. Whether in a classroom or a church hall, she was more than a teacher — she was a mentor, advocate, and steady source of encouragement.

Family was the center of Sarah’s world. She and Jim raised four children — Doug, Sally, Ted, and Bob — who were truly the light of her life. She instilled in them the values of respect, resilience, and love, and remained their greatest supporter and steadfast rock throughout her life.

Sarah was preceded in death by her parents, Edmund L. Grimes and Sarah E. Grimes; her husband’s parents George L. Howard and Theresa L. Howard, her beloved twin sister, Martha Mabie (Grimes); and her cherished daughter, Sarah “Sally” Howard (Lyle).

She is survived by her loving husband, James A. Howard; her sons, James D. Howard (Anita), Theodore M. Howard (Stefan), and Robert C. Howard (Maureen); her treasured grandchildren, Samantha, Douglas, Lauren, Robert, William, Victoria, Ryan, and Grace; and her great grandchild, Faith, all of whom carry forward her legacy of strength, kindness, and devotion. She also leaves behind her loving sister Mary, brother Clark, and sister Kate as well as many extended family members and dear friends who brought joy to her life.

Sarah’s life was defined by strength, dedication, and love — for her family, her students, and her community. She will be remembered for her sharp mind, steady presence, generous heart, and the countless lives she shaped for the better.
