Funeral services for long time Parker resident, Dolores Lomayesva Harjo, will be held 8:00am on Saturday, August 17, 2019 at the Poston Baptist Church in Poston, AZ, Followed with the burial at Parker Cemetery.
Wake services will be Friday, August 16, 2019, at the Poston Baptist Church from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.
Dolores, 87, Died at her home Wednesday, August 7, 2019, after a long illness. She was born to Dwight Moody Lomayesva and Mary Burnette Lomayesva, in Sonora, CA, on November 19, 1932. The family returned to Five House near Polocca. Later, in September 1945, her parents with their 8 children and other members of the Lomayesva clan with their children. relocated to Poston and resided in the former Japanese internment camp known as Camp 2. Eventually, the family moved to their permanent home on their land assignment in Poston.
After graduation from Parker High School, Dolores went to Bacone College in Muskogee, OK, where she met her husband Kenna Harjo. Together they raised three children, Karen, Kay, Kenna Jr., and Elizabeth Mary, in Konowa, Tulsa, Oklahoma City and Del City, OK, until moving the family to Poston, AZ in 1966.
With opportunities for job advancement, Dolores, her husband and children moved to Fort Apache, AZ, then to Albuquerque, NM.
Dolores had a long career working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, eventually retiring in 1994 as Phoenix Area Security Officer.
Dolores is survived by her son Kenna Harjo, Jr. of Phoenix, AZ, daughter Karen Harjo of Parker, AZ, nine grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, her brothers Frank Lomayesva of Parker, Dwight Lomayesva, Jr., of Poston and Riverside, CA, sister Gloria Esquerra of Tucson, AZ, brother William Lomayesva of Poston, AZ, sister Rose Marie Miller of Phoenix, AZ and Rose Mary Velarde of Phoenix, AZ, and 29 nieces and nephews, and close to 30 grand nieces and nephews.
Preceding her death were her parents, Dwight Moody and Mary Burnette Lomayesva, sisters Marigold Galetka and Juanita Nelson, daughter Elizabeth Mary Harjo Huerta, and granddaughter Casey Jo Pipestem.
Immediate family members, extended family and numerous friends will be in attendance to pay tribute to a precious, beautiful, honorable, appreciative and loving lady.
