Alan Westley Moore

After a lengthy battle with dementia, one that first took his independence, then his memory, and ultimately his life, Alan passed away on September 11, 2026 at the age of 94. He had lost his loving wife Anne 3 ½ years ago, as well as his sister Muriel, brother Ken and many, many friends and relations. He is survived by his children Tami (Al LeMoine), Shaun, Shelley (Eric Edwards) and Erin (Jeff Childs). Also surviving Al are his four grandchildren Mark (Shania), Scott, Gabi (Damon), Cam (Mel) and two great grandchildren Hudson and Elorah. He is also survived by his sister Doreen and his many nieces and nephews.

Al joined the RCMP in 1951, and after serving all over Alberta, retired as Staff Sergeant in Banff in 1979. He was an avid climber while stationed in both Jasper and Banff, and hunted, fished and hiked extensively. Because of Al’s extensive experience in skiing and mountaineering, he was selected to provide personal security to Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau during skiing and mountain climbing trips.

Al and Anne retired to Vancouver Island in 1989 and settled in Nanoose Bay with the intention of fishing as much as possible, which he enjoyed with family and friends. He was a volunteer for both the SOS and North Island Recovery Centre and was a proud member of the Streamkeepers Association in Nanoose Bay, and was still climbing in and out of streams until 4 months before entering care at the age of 89.

Al and Anne were extraordinarily proud of their four grandchildren, and spent as much time with them as possible, watching them grew to incredible adults. Sadly, Anne passed before she was able to meet her great grandchildren Hudson and Elorah, and while Al was able to meet Hudson briefly, his disease robbed him of the ability to truly get to enjoy the both of them.

Al spent the last 4 ½ years in care at Arrowsmith Lodge in Parksville. While it was never the way he would have wished to spend his final years, the care he received from their staff was truly superb. He was cared for with the utmost respect and compassion and was loved by many. And while his disease changed him so dramatically in many ways, he remained feisty and stubborn until his dying breath. Patty, Kelly, Mandy, Mary (and many, many more) but most especially Danielle were the most important people in Al’s life, and the family will be eternally grateful for their loving care.

A celebration of Al and Anne’s lives will be held at Tigh Na Mara on October 10 from 2 – 5pm. No flowers are requested but donations in both their memory can be made to the Arrowsmith Lodge Society.
