Known for his ability to connect with and relate to absolutely anyone, Alex ("Beach" or "Beach Boy") lived life on his own terms. Sweet and spicy in equal measure, he was outrageously funny, irreverently opinionated, fiercely independent, and incredibly stubborn.
Alex possessed the rare ability to be both brilliantly intelligent and spectacularly oblivious to common sense, often within the same ten-minute span. He never met a risk he didn't want to take, approaching life – and every cliff, ski hill, drop-off, snack run and wild idea – with infectious, breathless enthusiasm and joy. Whether it was an adventure nobody else would attempt or a spontaneous plan that made everyone question his sanity, Alex was always ready. When he was around, you could count on a crazy story, a hilarious misadventure, or an unforgettable memory being just around the corner.
Beneath the fearless exterior and quick wit was a heart of gold. Alex loved his people fiercely and deeply. If you were lucky enough to be loved by him, you knew you had a ferocious protector, a loyal confidant, and someone who would drop everything to help when you needed him. He was steadfast in his love, generous with his time, and endlessly devoted to the people he cared about – especially when he relentlessly and mercilessly teased us. No matter where he was, Alex was impossible to ignore and impossible to forget. He filled every room with laughter, mischief, and warmth.
Alex's life was lived on his own terms. He reminded those around him to take the leap, be grateful, embrace adventure, play, laugh at life's absurdities, challenge authority, and love without hesitation. His loss leaves a hole in our hearts that can never be filled, but the stories, laughter, and memories he created will live on in everyone who knew and loved him.
Tragically, Alex died because of toxic drugs, a loss that has left his family and friends heartbroken and struggling to imagine life without him. While the circumstances of his death are heartbreaking, they do not define the remarkable man he was or the life he lived. He will be remembered for his loyalty, his courage, his humor, his boundless energy, and the immeasurable love he shared with his family and friends.
Alex is survived by his sister, Cassidy Smith, and his parents, Judy Garnons Williams and Jim Smith, along with countless loved ones across the country who will carry him in their hearts.
A celebration of Alex's life – where sharing your favorite and most outrageous Alex stories is strongly encouraged – will be held on August 22nd, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at Yates Memorial at 1000 Allsbrook Road, Parksville BC. We would be grateful to receive any photos or stories you have of Alex. Please send them to [email protected]
In lieu of flowers, and in true Alex fashion, please consider doing something daring, loving fearlessly, or making a donation, in his memory, to a cause that is meaningful to you.
Love never dies.
