He is survived by his wife and best friend of 50 years, Marlene; sons, Dave, Brad (Jenn); grandchildren, Caitlyn, Easton, Jaclyn and Anja; daughter in law, Lori Jones; and his best buddy Miss Boots. He is also survived by his sisters, Grace, Cynthia (Jim) and Marjorie (Joe); many nephews and nieces, extended family members and friends. "Dwang" sends a big hug to his Uncle Buck.
Buck was born in Edmonton, Alberta and in his younger years grew up on the family junk yard. One day his dad told him, at the age of 12, if he could start any car in the yard, it was his. Low and behold, Buck did and there started his love for old cars.
Buck started longhaul truck driving at a very young age. Starting in Edmonton up to Watson Lake. Back to Vancouver - Edmonton for Hunt Transport. With wanting to expand his horizons, he started travelling throughout the USA. He worked for many companies, too many to mention but some I will touch on that comes to mind as Buck reminisced a lot about them. His most memorable was for Lightner Transpt. out of Brownsville, Texas where he partnered up with the bosses son, Larry whom became his best friend. During this time Buck earned 2 - 1 million mile badges which he was so proud of.
Eventually he made his way to Victoria where he owned a gravel truck and worked for Malik and Mosely and himself.
In 1970, Buck moved from Victoria, BC with son David to make his home in Port Alberni and worked at Western Bus Lines as a mechanic/painter, bus driver. In 1971 Buck and Marlene met and were married in 1973. It was in 1974, the family moved to Ucluelet where Buck worked for and ran Millstream Timber's Shop. While living in Ucluelet, their son, Brad was born in 1975.
Back to Port Alberni, they came and Buck went to work for Ray Klevens Logging in Toba Inlet. Being away from home for long periods of time was not for him with a young family so he hired on with J A McKay Trucking - a job he thoroughly enjoyed. Years later he was offered a job to work for Joan and John Gerbrandt of Ucluelet Contracting hauling fish. After a few years he was offered the chance to buy one of John's trucks from the fleet which he jumped at - hence became B Jones Trucking. He subcontracted for Dolans Concrete & J W Berry. While working for Dolan's from 1990 /1998, Buck hauled many thousands of tonnage material which contributed to the creation of the new Island Highway (Highway 19). During this time, Buck also hauled all the materials to the site for one of the bridges being built on the way to Parksville. The many times we travelled to Nanaimo, he would proudly say . . . that's 'MY' bridge Mar. After years the trucks were sold and he worked for Rayner & Bracht till retirement at 75. All these years of driving truck brought Buck much joy - something he fondly remembered and wouldn't change for the world! Thanks for the memories - 10 4 good buddies.
Buck's career was long and full doing what he loved especially restoring old cars. Much fun and great times were spent with family and friends in the shop over many a "bevy"!
Buck had a quick wit and a force to reckon with (as I have been told) !!
He loved his grandkids, especially when our grandson Easton would watch Nascar with Grandpa. He was in his glory.
Buck's life was his family and he did everything in his power to show it. As long as Buck was around family, friends, trucks, and old cars, he was a happy man.
Special thanks to Dr Daryl Lund, Dr Anienne Marsay, Dr Wendy Johnsen, and all the caregivers that came daily to his home. Also to Ty Watson House for the love and compassion they showed to Buck in his last week. Special thanks also go out to Diane and Lois, "Buck's special ladies". You are the best and we thank and love you all from the bottom of our hearts!
A Celebration of Buck's life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, June 10, 2023 at the Royal Canadian Legion, 4680 Victoria Quay, Port Alberni.
