June 25, 1951 - December 20, 2021
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of David Jokinen, a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and dear friend. Dave was born and raised in Thunder Bay, Ontario. He attended Hammarskjold High school and later Lakehead University. He thoroughly enjoyed playing football, hockey and baseball and in later years playing golf and watching sports. He enjoyed being outdoors camping, canoeing and fishing and at his camp on Cummins Lake North. Dave was also well travelled beginning with an epic trip across Europe in his youth and then later to various places including Hawaii, Turkey, Italy, Malaysia, Singapore and Australia.
After Dave’s retirement from many years work at the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital, he and Nancy moved to British Columbia to be closer to Janis and Laura as well as for Nancy’s work. Recently, they relocated to Parksville to spend more time with the girls and their families. Of course there were also many rounds of golf and those beautiful area beaches.
Dave was predeceased by his parents Helen and Waino Jokinen; brothers Dick, Lorne, Bob and Bill Jokinen; in-laws Arthur and Laila Lahti, and Dave and Nan Lahti; and some dear friends (including the animal ones).
Dave is survived by Nancy his wife of 48 years; daughters Janis Shandro/Jokinen (Gerard Wessel), and Laura Jokinen (Shane Harris); grandchildren Ushuaia Shandro and Harlan Harris; sister and brother in-law, Kathryn and Jim Hughes; in-laws Sandy Jokinen and Gayle and Derek Tedder along with nieces, nephews, long-time good friends and his favourite big dog Sami.
We all knew Dave had a great sense of humour, and recently would often say “Catch you on the flip-flop”. He was quietly compassionate towards people less fortunate with acts of kindness. He will be dearly missed. As per Dave’s request, no formal service is planned. Informally we will gather when we can and on more than one occasion to remember him over a cold beverage and good tunes. Honor him with random acts of kindness. Family condolences may be sent through a visit to www.yatesmemorial.ca
