He will always be lovingly remembered and forever missed by his sisters Joanne, Pauline, Donna. His children Laurie, Shelley (George), Christine (Tom), Doug, Tara (Scott), stepdaughter Tracy (Matthew). Grandchildren, 12 grandsons, 5 granddaughters, 6 great granddaughters and 5 great grandsons.
In 1974 Doug and his baby sister Donna took the train from Ontario across Canada to B.C. in search of work. He fell in love with the coast and moved his family to B.C. in 1975, he worked various jobs and in 1976 was employed full time as a welder at Utah Mines (Island Copper) in Port Hardy until its closing in 1995. He was a dedicated welder at the mine, known for his strong work ethic, creativity and passion for his craft. After retiring from the mine he kept very busy and spent many years doing yard work, cutting grass, cleaning windows and other handyman jobs.
With his large gifted hands he was not only a master at welding but also a skilled woodworker and fabricator. His creations ranged from picnic tables with heart cutouts, custom pedal bikes, furniture & more and his motto was, if he could build it, it was better than buying it. One of his hobbies was making wine and if you were invited over to his home you were proudly offered a sample of his delightful elixirs like huckleberry, banana or dandelion wine. Doug embraced all that life had to offer and stayed physically active, riding motorcycle, skiing the slopes with his family at Mt Washington, staying at the cabin on Powell lake, cycling, hiking and camping.
Sharing his life & creations with his family & friends was a true testament to his warm generous spirit and his desire to bring joy to others. He loved to laugh out loud, family gatherings & of course parties, reading, music, playing games and boogying on the dance floor like no one’s watching with his daughters. You always knew he was having a great time if he was smiling ear to ear & hooting at the top of lungs and giving you the two thumbs up. Doug will forever be remembered by his family & friends for his unwavering love for his family, smiling face, warm caring nature, forever saying god love ya, beautiful or awesome and a relentless pursuit to stay active into his senior years.
A heartfelt thank-you is extended to all of Doug’s doctors, nurses & caregivers for the care he received and especially to the wonderful staff at Stanford Senior Village in Parksville.
Charitable donations in memory of Doug can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
A celebration of Doug’s life will be held at a later date providing an opportunity for family and friends to come together.
