Douglas Frederick William McPhail

With deep sadness, the family of Douglas Frederick William McPhail, age 85, announces his peaceful passing after a brief illness. Born on August 4, 1941, Doug lived a full and hardworking life defined by devotion to family, pride in his craft, and a gentle philosophy he carried with him every day: “be happy.”

Doug married the love of his life, Donna Joan Hill, on June 11, 1960. Together, they built a life rooted in commitment, laughter, and resilience. They raised their family —Cathy Olesen (Rex Adam) and Bruce McPhail (Chris McPhail)—in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Doug was also a mentor and father figure to Derrick Olesen for many years. Doug took great pride in his grandchildren (Jamie, Kevin, Tess, Will) and great grandchildren.

Doug spent decades working in the trades. He excelled as a sheet metal worker and later earned his refrigeration trade qualification, a milestone he was immensely proud of. Over the years, he worked for several companies and ran his own businesses, always bringing skill, integrity, and a steady hand to his work.

After many Manitoba winters, Doug and Donna decided it was time for a new chapter. They sold their home on Garvin Road and their beloved cabin at Betula Lake and moved to Parksville, BC in 1994, where Doug embraced the milder climate and the beauty of Vancouver Island. Summers on the boat became treasured memories—catching salmon, exploring the coastline, and enjoying the outdoors with family.

Doug had a deep appreciation for nature. His backyard became a sanctuary for birds, squirrels, and the occasional raccoon. He found joy in simply watching and listening, taking in the small wonders of the world around him.

In 2023, Doug suffered the heartbreaking loss of Donna, his partner of more than six decades. Though the grief was profound, he continued to live by his daily mantra— “be happy”—a reminder he wrote in his notebook and embodied in his gentle, thoughtful way of moving through life. Doug is survived by his brother Kirk, his son Bruce (Chris), and his daughter Cathy. He was predeceased by his parents Archie and Anne, his brother Bruce, and his son in law Rex.

Doug will be remembered for his kindness, quiet strength, love of family, and his remarkable ability to find happiness in the everyday. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Qualicum Manor, whose exceptional care and compassion meant so much during Doug’s time there.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre of BC. A private family interment will take place at a later date.
