Born to Grace and Wilbur Mills and raised on the family farm in Maryfield, Saskatchewan, alongside her seven siblings, Elaine learned the values of hard work and family from an early age.
In 1949, she married her beloved husband, Elmer St. Clair Percy. Together they farmed near Maryfield, later moving to Regina, and eventually settling on Vancouver Island, raising five children along the way.
An accomplished seamstress, Elaine created everything from draperies and tailored suits to wedding gowns—and even 22 ballet tutus. She loved a good game of bridge, crib, mahjong, and Mexican Train, and was a gracious but frequent winner at crib.
Elaine joined the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1970 and enjoyed a successful career in sales until her retirement in 1993.
After retirement, she and Elmer built their dream home at Morningstar Golf Course in Parksville, where Elaine learned and mastered the game of golf. Enjoying golf into her 82nd year, she showed us all that you are never too old to learn—earning her driver’s license in her 70s (after only ever driving tractors and a golf cart) with the help of her dear friend Judy, and continuing to drive until she was 90.
Elaine was predeceased by her husband Elmer and daughter Laurie (Daniel). Elaine is survived by her son Richard (Wendy), daughters Gail (Keith), Colleen (Kelvin), Holly (Glen), 12 grandchildren (each of them being her favorite), and many great-grandchildren; her sister Lucille and sister-in-laws Carol and Joan.
Elaine leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and the courage to embrace new challenges. Mom, you will be greatly missed.
A private family graveside service is planned for a later date.
