Evelyn Shirley Lowery passed away on Monday June 19th in Comox, British Columbia. Evelyn was born to Robert Horrocks and Margaret Hendry on November 11, 1930 in Hitchcock, Saskatchewan. She grew up on a farm with her sister Helen and her brothers Harley and Douglas. She attended school in a one room class. The Tilley family moved in nearby with their 13 children and the families became quick friends. Evelyn followed the Tilley family to Port Alberni to find work and lived there for 61 yrs. Evelyn was a “small town girl”. She loved living in Port Alberni. In 1953 missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints began teaching her and she joined the church with her good friends Alice and Lila Tilley. She was baptized in the Stamp River. Finding her place in the church was everything to her. She was a follower of Jesus Christ till the day she died. Evelyn started working in the Plywood Mill in Port Alberni where she met Matt Lowery. Evelyn was a single mother to Darlene, born in 1951, and finding Matt and the church were an answer to her prayers. They married on October 21, 1957. Three more children followed quickly. Greg was born in 1958, Sheri in 1960, and Jamie in 1961. Theirs was a 66 year love story.
Mom loved camping. At times she had two kids in diapers and she went anyways, washing out the diapers in a bucket. They took us kids on road trips our entire lives. Dad was driving and the map was in Mom’s lap while she figured out where our next “adventure” would be. Mom loved going to visit her relatives in Saskatchewan. Mom love hiking. Every Tuesday she sent us off to school and she went hiking with her friends for the day. Mom loved having a garden, which Dad worked tirelessly to provide every year. Mom canned, dehydrated or we ate everything in the garden. Mom loved serving others. There was always a pie, cake, cookies or a meal leaving our house for someone in need. Mom visited the sick, the afflicted, those struggling, or hopeless. She was a true disciple of Jesus Christ. Mom kept an immaculate house. She was organized, frugal and hard working. She never tired of the everyday chores of life. Mom took good care of herself. She walked everyday at the track. Mom was happy and fun. Watching Mom laugh so hard tears were running down her face was “epic.” Mom loved going to church. She rarely missed a church meeting. In her later years Dad joined her at church because he loved her so much. Dad was so loving and gentle with Mom, it was a blessing to see them together. Mom loved her kids. Our world was her world. She continued to have sleepless nights well into her 80’s worrying about her kids.
Evelyn is survived by her husband Matt, their children: Darlene (Steve) Nelson, Greg (Shelly) Lowery, Sheri (Kevin) Mertin and Jamie Lowery. She has 11 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Our family would like to thank the staff at “The Views” for taking such good care of Mom for the past two years. Although we will miss her, we will see her again in heaven. She leaves a legacy of love and faith and we will strive to be like her for the rest of our lives. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on July 28, 2023 at the Port Alberni chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (4815 Compton Road).
