Florence Emily O'Connell

Florrie was born in Dublin, Ireland, she was the daughter of George and Emily Bolton. She graduated high school the top of her class and went on to work as a telephone operator and seamstress. She designed and fitted numerous gowns and dresses for many weddings while outfitting herself and many family members with everyday wear or formal attire.

Florrie married Derek Parkes in Ireland then moved to Canada to start a new life together. Settling in Victoria, she was the proud mother of her three sons, Raymond, Norman and Douglas. Along with raising her sons, she endeavored to continue her seamstress creations.

Later in life she remarried to Daniel O’Connell and together they built their retirement home in Qualicum Beach. Avid gardeners, together they spent many happy years working tirelessly, tending to their Qualicum lot. In the greenhouse, 3000 bedding plants started for their own garden and for anyone in need of extra plants.

A Qualicum Beach vacation was a highlight for many family and friends from Ireland to Cape Breton or the USA. Florrie was the ultimate hostess who ensured everyone enjoyed a hearty Irish breakfast or a sit-down roast beef dinner fit for a king, with many Irish limericks thrown in at the table conversation, and a game of cards to round out the evening.

Florrie & Dan travelled to Ireland to visit with family; Hawaii was another favorite destination experienced.

Florrie was predeceased by her parents, brother Derek, son Norman and stepdaughter Patti. She is survived by siblings Harry, Gert (Alec), Pat (Frank); sons Ray (Suzanne), Doug (Louise), daughter-in-law Gwen (Norman) and stepsons Dan (Rene), Glen (Gloria) and Randy (Patti). There are many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and of course so many friends of family members that enjoyed the vacation times in Qualicum Beach.

RIP Florrie you were loved by everyone.

A service will be held at Yates Memorial in Parksville, BC on Sept 9, 2026 at 2pm with a reception immediately following.
