Hartmut Horst Ewald Haase

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Hartmut Horst Ewald Haase of Qualicum Beach, BC, on July 10, 2026, at the age of 78. Though his passing was unexpected, we are grateful for a life well lived and the many memories he leaves with those who loved him.

Hartmut was born on March 27, 1948, in Spandau, Berlin, Germany. In 1952, he and his family immigrated to Canada, settling on Vancouver Island. He spent much of his childhood in Port Alberni, graduating in 1966.

A lifelong learner, Hartmut earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia before completing his teaching degree at Simon Fraser University. He had a deep appreciation for the arts, poetry, photography, woodworking, gardening, and travel, visiting many parts of North America, Europe, Oceania, Asia and the Middle East. Hartmut greatly enjoyed fellowship and lively conversations, often shared over a good cup of coffee, or a beer.

In 1974, Hartmut met the love of his life, Gudrun. They married in 1978 and shared another 48 wonderful years together in Qualicum Beach, raising their family with love, faith, and devotion.

Hartmut worked in the forestry industry for nearly 30 years, providing for his family, whom he considered his greatest blessing and accomplishment. His faith was a guiding presence throughout his life, reflected in his quiet kindness, humility, and compassion for others.

Vancouver Island always held a special place in Hartmut's heart. Together with his wife and children, he found peace and inspiration in its coastline, beaches, forests, lakes, and mountains. Whether walking along the shore, exploring the outdoors, or tending his garden, he found happiness in nature's beauty and had a deep appreciation for the world around him.

Hartmut will be dearly missed by his beloved wife, Gudrun; his children, Andreas (Lauren), Daniel (Shauna), Martin (Cici), and Elisa (Stephen); his nine cherished grandchildren; his siblings, Winfried, Gerald, and Anita; his father-in-law, Günter; his brother-in-law, Siegmar; and many in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends in Canada, Germany, and China.

His kindness, spirit, and devotion to his family will be remembered always. Though he is no longer with us, his love and the example he set will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
