

James is survived by his loving wife, Arleigh; children, Lorrell (Ron) Benson, Jamie Clifford Cates, Joell (Ian Fallon) Turgeon; seven grandchildren, Daylin (Bruce) Keizer, Brantley Benson, Quinn Turgeon, Fiona Turgeon, Emmilly Benson, Whitney (Jesse Conn) Benson, Ryan (Amanda) Benson; sister, Shirley Receveur; brother, Brien (Ardelle) Cates; cousins, David and Dagmar Cates, Bev Blundell, Dick and Diane Birkby. Predeceased by his father, Joseph Maitland Cates and his mother, Nora Vesta (O'Brien) Cates, and infant daughter, Arleigh Mae Cates.
James had a variety of fulfilling careers during his lifetime including being an RCMP Officer, Insurance Adjuster with SGIO and Western Adjustment, Millwright, and a Maintenance man at Fir Park and Echo Village Care Facilities. James donated much of his time to groups and organizations that he felt strongly about. He was a member of Barclay Masonic Lodge #90 in Port Alberni, Job's Daughter's, Citizens on Patrol, Auxiliary RCMP, Scout Master, The Longest Day of Golf, Air Cadets, and St Stephen's Board of Stewards. When James wasn't busy with his volunteer commitments, he very much enjoyed woodworking, and was better known by his son as "Tool Belt Jim!"
