Born in Deloraine, Manitoba on November 21, 1938, Jim is predeceased by his high school sweetheart and wife of 42 years, Edith (Krebs), parents David and Tillie, brother Larry (Joan & Pat), in-laws Herman and Ethel Krebs, and step in-laws, Gerald and Pauline Garby.
He leaves cherished memories to his partner and love of 19 years, Ruth Hebden (Garby), son Kent (Joanna) Duncan, daughter Keri (Dale) Herle, stepdaughters Stephanie (Martin) Winther and Rebecca (Steve) Arman; grandchildren Jordan, Kelsi, Julia, Brett, step grandchildren Wayne, Dean, Colin and Lanny; brother-in-law William (Margit) Krebs; niece Wendy Merrick, nephews Greg and Gord Duncan, friends and neighbours.
Jim’s first years were spent in rural Waskada, MB. He was always proud of the fact that at the age of 10 he was able to drive a grain truck and tractor, thus being able to help on the family farm. He moved to Salmon Arm, BC at age 13, and it was here that he met his first love, Edith. They married in 1960. Their children were raised in Port Alberni, where Jim had a fulfilling and successful career as a Chartered Accountant. In 1987 he and Edith built a new home in Qualicum Beach and this is where their retirement began. Edith passed away in 2003, and in time, Jim was fortunate to find love again, with Ruth.
Jim enjoyed camping, RVing, reading, daily walks and was a tried and true Toronto Maple Leafs fan. Family holidays covered many provinces and several states. This continued into retirement with highly anticipated RV trips to warm destinations and a trip to Nova Scotia to meet Ruth’s family.
Most of all, Jim cherished time spent with family and friends. Whether it be talking to neighbours, sharing a coffee at Timmy’s with friends, or just catching up on the phone with relatives, the conversation always included his grandchildren. He was a proud Grampa/Papa!
Jim was kind, generous and humble. He saw the good in people and lived his life with integrity and honesty. He was a true gentleman. Those who were blessed to have known him and be loved by him, will miss him deeply.
Thank you to the physicians and specialists who have supported Jim over the years, as well as the doctors, nurses and hospital staff at NRGH for their compassionate care. At Jim’s request, a family graveside service was held in Qualicum Beach, BC. In lieu of flowers please follow Jim’s generosity by donating to a charity of your choice.
