

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Maud Melita Barnes (Whiffen), born November 4, 1937 in Bonavista, Newfoundland and passed on March 25, 2023 in Qualicum Beach, British Columbia. She was predeceased by her parents Harold and Blanche Whiffen; brother Fred, sister Margaret and daughter Susan Jane. Maud is survived by William, her husband of 50 years; daughter Patricia, and many extended family.
Maud was born and raised in a fishing settlement in Newfoundland. Both her father and grandfathers were fishermen. Upon completing high school, Maud entered training for x-ray/medical lab technician. When her coursework was completed, she worked in several cottage hospitals in Newfoundland before moving to Ontario and working in hospitals in Sudbury and London. By 1969, she had moved out west to Vancouver, BC, where she worked in medical clinics for 4 years. During this time, she met her future husband, William, on a cruise to Alaska. They married in 1973 and lived in Victoria, BC. She continued her x-ray career in Victoria, Dawson Creek, and Parksville. She spent her retirement years in Qualicum Beach, BC.
Maud was an intelligent, independent, capable woman with high ideals. She had many friends, relating well to others. She was friendly, sincere, and honest.
Deeply missed, lovingly remembered.
There will be a memorial service on Saturday, April 15th, 2023 at 2pm at Yates Memorial Services (1000 Allsbrook Road) in Parksville, BC.
