It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Monty Montgomery. A man whose warmth and wisdom shaped generations, he leaves behind a legacy woven from acts of kindness, devotion, and enduring love. Monty was known for his laughter and wonderful storytelling. He lived a “huge life”, and his many acts of bravery showed him to be a real-life hero.
Monty lived a life anchored in family. As a devoted husband, he was a steadfast companion to his wife, Sylvia. They shared a journey filled with laughter, perseverance, and unwavering support. They traveled extensively: across Canada, through Europe, on and enjoyed many sunny vacations (Mexico, Hawaii, and Palm Springs).
Monty is reunited in peace with his cherished wife Sylvia, his brother Robert, and his precious granddaughter Lindsay, whose memories were held close to his heart.
As a father, he offered guidance, encouragement, and love to his children—both biological and step—nurturing their dreams and celebrating their successes. He loved to share with them his knowledge of history and stories of his life on the high seas.
His role as a grandfather and great-grandfather was marked by endless joy. He delighted in the laughter of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, sharing in their wonder and fostering curiosity with every hug and story. His love spanned generations and united family near and far.
Family was never defined by boundaries for him; his embrace extended to stepchildren and all those who found comfort in his presence. He believed that love was not limited by blood, but was something to be freely given, and he enriched the lives of those who knew him with his generosity and warmth.
Monty’s legacy was also deeply shaped by his remarkable career with the Canadian Coast Guard. Beginning his journey as a humble deck hand, he rose through the ranks with dedication, discipline, and an unwavering sense of responsibility to the safety of others. Over the years, Monty became a respected captain, commanding numerous ships and guiding crews through calm and storm alike. His leadership and steady hand inspired confidence, and his crew members often spoke of his wisdom, patience, and fairness.
Perhaps most enduring was Monty’s role as a mentor: through his tireless teaching and example, he helped shape the careers and lives of hundreds of seamen. Monty believed in nurturing talent and encouraging growth, imparting not just technical skill but also values of teamwork, courage, and integrity. His influence extended far beyond the ships he captained—echoing in the hearts of those he trained, many of whom went on to become leaders in their own right. Monty received many accolades for his bravery and service; however, it was the enduring friendships with co-workers, that he treasured the most.
Beyond his family and distinguished career, Monty found profound purpose in community service. He was a dedicated Shriner and Freemason, cherishing the fellowship and values of these organizations. Through charitable work, camaraderie, and a commitment to helping others, Monty exemplified the spirit of brotherhood and benevolence at the heart of these traditions. His involvement brought him deep friendships and allowed him to extend his compassion beyond the bounds of family, reaching into the broader community and uplifting countless lives through acts both seen and unseen.
As we gather to celebrate his life, we remember a man who gave so much to those he loved—a gentle soul whose laughter filled rooms, whose wisdom built bridges, and whose love will echo for generations to come.
He will be missed dearly, but his spirit lives on in every life he touched. We take comfort in knowing that his legacy of kindness, strength, and love endures—a beacon shining brightly for all who follow.
He is mourned by a loving and extensive family: his children Donna (David), Kevin (Cindy), and Brenda; his step-children Christine (Al), Phil (Dawn), and Kim; his grandchildren Christopher (Thu), Kiara, Sabrina, and Hannah; step-grandchildren Victoria (Russ), Douglas (Deanna), Naomi (Jey), Marijke (John), Bo, Pierce, Quinn, Reanne (Ewan), and Rachel; and great-grandchildren Aiyla, Thomas, Amelia, Evelyn, Isla, Ornette, and newborn Evelyn. Each carries forward a piece of Monty’s kindness, wisdom, and humour, their lives forever brightened by his gentle guidance and unwavering love.
Rest in peace, Dad. Your memory will be our blessing, now and always.
