Ruth, beloved wife of Dr Mo, transitioned from this earthly tent and body to her eternal home on February 14, 2024. She leaves behind her daughter; Janine Umran and husband Jim Versteeg (along with her 2 sons and his son and daughter;) her son, Naji Umran and wife, Anne Zaki in Egypt (and their 4 sons), and finally their youngest son, Tamim Umran and his wife, Jennifer Berezowskyj (along with their 2 sons and 1 daughter); all of whom she cherished deeply.
Ruth was born in her mother's homeland of Germany and lived in her father's homeland of Holland. She immigrated with her family to Canada in 1952. Her Canadian life began in Manitoba, then moving on to time spent in Saskatchewan, and finally settling down in Kelowna, BC in 1958. Ruth graduated as a Registered Nurse from Vancouver General Hospital in 1967 and decided to visit her German roots in 1970.
It is in Germany that she met and married Dr Mo, of now 50 years. Together they worked toward returning to his family in Syria but due to the political situation at the time, this became impossible, and they decided to immigrate to Canada in 1980, to be with Ruth's family in Kelowna, BC. Getting into the Canadian Medical system as a foreign trained medical doctor was very difficult and the family soon found it was necessary to move to Toronto . . then London, and then Calgary. Dr Mo was finally able to practice as the Specialist he already was, in the position he loved, her in Port Alberni, BC in 1990. Ruth was his right-hand person throughout all these moves and challenges, sustained through it all by her deep faith. During the course of the past 40 years, they were able to visit Dr Mo's family in Syria nearly 20 times, as well as enjoying several other travel opportunities that took them to several other countries in the world.
Ruth loved to read, lead Bible studies, and be active in her Church. She had a passion for order, beauty, and planting and creating beautiful gardens on their property, wherever they lived. Kelowna had always been the ultimate goal, and that is where retirement in 2009 took them, but in 2015 the family moved back to Port Alberni, to be near their family there. together, they greatly enjoyed creating and tending to their growing gardens and other projects.
The Umran family is very grateful to the people of Port Alberni, "the city with a heart", and particularly the Community Health and Palliative Care Team, for their compassion and care these past few months.
A Memorial Service will be held at noon on Sunday, February 25, 2024 at the Port Alberni Christian Reformed Church, 5033 Roger Street in Port Alberni, BC.
