Steve passed away peacefully at home with family by his side. Steve was predeceased by his parents, Pete Coates, Beth Johnson; his stepfather, Dennis Johnson; and his brothers, Max and Terry Johnson. He will always be remembered and missed by his son and daughter, Shelby and Katlyn Coates; their mother, Connie Wethal; his partner, Kim Vanden Hoek; Kim's children Casey and Kristen; siblings, Frank Coates, Keith (Marlene) Coates, Cam (Georgina) Coates, Patsy Robins, Bruce (Cherye) Johnson, Bill (Patty) Coates, Kelly (Rod) Cameron, Jenny (Don) McInroy, Dale (Michelle) Johnson, Grant (Deb) Coates, Tim (Misty Hunsbeht) Johnson; as well as numerous nieves, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, extended family members and friends.
Steve was a hard worker and enjoyed his working life in the various positions he held. He was a certificated carpenter and industrial painter but mostly worked as in Independent Contractor. Unfortunately, he was involved in a logging accident on July 18. 2016 and suffered life threatening injuries. Since that time, he has been fighting for survival and he did that with a kind, stubborn, strong positive attitude, without once day of complaint.
His passion was acquiring the Kildonan Lodge in 2014; he found his happiness there with family, friends, and clients.
The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful people that helped Steve from co-workers, air ambulance, doctors, nurses, care aides, and everyone who loved and helped to care for Steve during his last years of life.
A Celebration of Life will be held in his honour from 3:00 to 5:00 pm on Saturday, January 25, 2020 at the Cherry Creek Hall at 3720 Moore Road in Port Alberni.
