Stewart Lauder Moore

Born in Heysham Village, Lancaster, England, Stewart immigrated to Canada at just 6 months old with his war bride mother, Mary, while his father, Owen, remained in England recovering from injuries he sustained in the war. The family, including his younger sister Kathleen, lived in many different places throughout his childhood as a military family, but some of the most special to Stewart were his time spent in Churchill, MB and at Belmont Park in Victoria, BC. After meeting and marrying the love of his life, Lois (nee Kinkade), they settled in Qualicum Beach, BC in 1974 and helped to run her family’s business, The Shady Rest, while they grew their family of 4 children, sons Daniel, Andrew, and Sean, and daughter Elisabeth.

Not long after, Stewart found his passion with the Qualicum Beach Volunteer Fire Department. He took great pride in serving the community for 22 years, including 9 years as Deputy Chief and 6 years as Fire Chief, before retiring from the department. He also enjoyed other career paths along the way in the local tourism sector and as a by-law officer for the Town of Qualicum Beach. Stewart was particularly proud of his involvement in helping develop the emergency preparedness plans for the town, as he strongly believed in caring for the safety of others, above all else.

After retirement, and then the loss of his dear Lois, Stewart found joy in spending time with his family, including dinners with his adult children and watching his 3 granddaughters grow up. He also loved visiting with friends, listening to music, and time with his beloved cat Twigs.

The last few years have been tough ones healthwise, but Stewart’s strength, resilience, and positive attitude always shone through, right up to his last days. He and his family have been so grateful to every member of his care team, from doctors, nurses, care aides and pharmacists, to the Oceanside Home Support and Community Palliative Care teams, as well as Trillium Hospice. Every person was integral in making Stewart feel comforted, happy, and fulfilled in that time.

Stewart will be deeply missed by so many but will always be in our hearts. There will be no service by request. In lieu of flowers, donations in Stewart’s honour could be made to:
