Bill was born on January 2, 1935, in Vancouver, BC to Alex and Jean De Hart. He moved to Lantzville with his family when he was 12, attending school in Nanaimo and then took heavy duty mechanics at the Nanaimo Trade School. Bill moved out on his own at 17, operating heavy equipment and working on various construction projects including the Kitimat and Kemano Power Project. He joined the BC Power Commission as an apprentice linesmen in 1956, building transmission lines around the province. He then moved to the distribution side of BC Hydro as a lineman in Terrace in 1959 and worked his way up from lineman to District Manager, completing his 36-year BC Hydro career in various locations including Terrace, Sechelt, Burnaby and Qualicum Beach, retiring in 1962.
When it came to downsize from the house in Qualicum Beach, Margaret and Bill moved to a condo in Parksville with water views. Outside of work, Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, curling, winters in Yuma, woodworking, golf, coffee at the beach, cruising and the occasional casino visit.
He is survived by his loving family: his wife of 67 years, Margaret; his children, Jim (Darlene) and Rick; grandchildren Brandon (Sarah), and Alicia (Cameron) and great grandchildren Malcolm, Maisie, Logan and Eva, brother-in-law Ray (Lynn) Scarsbrook, sister-in-law Lynda Milton and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family, as well as special friends and neighbors. He was predeceased by his parents Alex and Jean and his brother D'Arcy.
He will be remembered for his dry sense of humour, his reliability, his strength right up until his passing, and his love for his family.
No service will be held at Bills request.
A family celebration will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Vancouver Island Cancer Clinic.
