The world lost a beautiful soul far too soon when Chris Apel, 55, passed away on November 11, 2025. Though his time here was heartbreakingly short, his impact was anything but small.
Chris was first and foremost a devoted father. His two sons, Joey and John, were the light of his life — his greatest joy and his proudest accomplishment. Every rugby try and kick, every sprint and baton hand off, every shared story at a table full of smoked meats, reflected the depth of his love for them. He was also a great “Steppy 1” to his daughters, Erin and Emma, who brought sparkle and chaos in equal measure. He survived countless selfie sessions, navigated every wave of girl drama with grace (and an occasional eyeroll), and loved them as his own.
He was also the fun uncle — the one who showed up with a grin, a joke, and a wild idea. His nieces and nephews adored him for his big heart, his generous spirit, and his uncanny ability to make each of them feel seen and special.
Chris had a rare kind of light that drew people in, a magnetic mix of humor, kindness, and an easygoing spirit that made everyone feel like family.
His love for his wife was steadfast — a partnership built on laughter, patience, and her unwavering commitment to “Monday night salads”, never complaining about watering the garden for the third time that day. Together, they made an extraordinary team regardless of their differences in college football. (O-H…)
He was also the kind of friend everyone hopes to have: dependable, genuine, and always ready to lend an ear or share a laugh.
Though our hearts ache at his absence, he wouldn’t want us to dwell in sorrow. He’d tell us to laugh a little louder, love a little harder, and find joy in the small moments - because that’s exactly how he lived. His coaching spirit will forever live on in the sons he cherished and in the countless lives he touched just by being himself.
He is survived by his wife, Kristin; beloved sons, Joey and John ,their mother, Lindsey Rossbach; daughters, Erin Strickland (Michael) and Emma Monroe; mother, Brenda Apel, brother, Matt Apel (Corrie); grandson, Mason Strickland and his many nieces, nephews, and friends who will carry his love forward. Preceded in death by father, Barney.
Honoring his wishes, cremation will take place. Memorial visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. on Wednesday, December 3, 2025 at Impact City Church, 8577 Watkins Rd., Pataskala, OH 43062. A celebration of life will follow at 5:00 p.m. at the church on Wednesday with Pastor Justin Ross and Pastor Mindy Ross. Family is requesting guests wear scarlet and grey. Dinner will be provided following services.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Watkins Memorial Athletic Association Boosters in memory of his kindness to the athletes and his love for the game.
