Mary Walker Hedrick, 92, formerly of Union City, GA passed away April 26, 2017. Mary Edna was born in Dayton, TX on December 8, 1924 the oldest child of Mary Agnes (Doll) Kent and Elmo Milton Walker. After her father’s untimely death, in 1938, she spent her teenage years in Corrigan, TX. She graduated from Texas Women’s University with a degree in home economics.
She met her husband, George Hedrick, while teaching his younger sister in Ennis, TX. They were married June 24, 1949 and honeymooned in Havana, Cuba. Delta Air Lines relocated the young family, now including a son and a daughter, from Dallas, TX to Atlanta, GA in 1962. Mary and George chose East Point, GA for their new home. Mary taught 7th grade at M.P. Word Elementary School in Fairburn, GA and at Mt. Olive Elementary in East Point, GA, retiring in 1980.
After retirement, Mary and George opened their own business, George’s Antiques, which afforded them many years of enjoyment traveling the country to various antique shows. Retirement also gave Mary and George the opportunity to enjoy time and travel with their grandchildren. Mary loved to go almost anywhere and loved to plan these trips. For many years Mary was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of East point and upon their move to Union City, she and George became members of Fairburn United Methodist Church.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 65 years; her sister, Jean Boepple; and her brother, Elmo Kent Walker.
She is survived by her son, George Hedrick of Tucker, GA; daughter, Linda (Jimmy) Lawrence of Carrollton, GA; granddaughters, Ashley Hedrick (Shannon) Browning of Livingston, MT and Leslie Lawrence (Stephen) Maddox of San Angelo, TX; grandsons, Kent Lawrence of Dahlonega, GA and Austin Hedrick of Atlanta, GA. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Violet and Savannah Browning; and twins, Clara and Hugh Maddox.
The family would like to thank Veronica Stark for her loving care and all her help, along with the loving caregivers at Carrollton Nursing and Rehab Center. No local memorial services are planned. Her cremains and those of her husband, George, will be scattered in their beloved State of Texas next spring when the bluebonnets bloom again.
Arrangements under the direction of Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home & Crematory, Peachtree City, GA.
