Winifred K. Horne passed peacefully on February 5, 2022 at the home of her daughter, Lyn, in Tyrone, GA where she lived the last 4 years of her life. She was born in Boston, MA in 1928 to the late Osgood A. Gilbert (1939) and Winifred Gibson Gilbert (1928). She moved to Tampa, FL in 1944 to wed her husband, Harold C. Horne.
Winnie, as she was affectionately known, spent her entire life taking care of others; her family and the patients she had the honor of caring for at University Community Hospital. She was awarded the coveted title of “employee of the year” for her caring attitude, compassion, and commitment to her job so many times during her 35 years of service that her family lost count. In 2003 she retired, but she did not stay away long, returning as a private sitter for families whose hospitalized loved ones needed a mothers loving care.
Family was always a priority for Winnie and her life revolved around her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Attending family gathering, especially during the holidays, was what she looked forward to the most. She was very active and outgoing, often delivering her famous banana bread and chocolate chip cookies to family and friends up until the last few years of her life. Mowing her yard and caring for her azaleas, which attracted the attention of the local news for their beauty, and making sure that the grave of her husband was taken care of, were her favorite past times.
Despite her health challenges, including surviving a diagnosis of cancer four times (the most recent being in 2018) she embraced life with energy, kindness and compassion. She made the world a better place. The legacy of Winnie’s life and the love she brought into ours, will live on forever in the memories of those whose life she touched.
Winnie was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Horne (2000), who she was married to 56 years, and three sons; Mark Horne (1953), Ronald Horne (2005), and Wayne Horne (2017); and a grandson, Brian Horne (2013).
Winnie is survived by her son, Bruce Horne, Tampa, FL; daughter, Lyn Redwood (Tommy) Tyrone, GA; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at Revolutionary Life Church, 18310 US 41, Lutz, FL on Friday, March 25, 2022 at 2:00pm. The service will be streamed live on Facebook @Rlifechurch.
