Gilbert was born in Jackson, Mississippi, on June 9,1953, to Emma Jean Ramsey and Troy Eugene Nowell. He grew up in Nanih Waiya, Mississippi, where he attended local public schools. In 1968, Gilbert and his family moved to Pearl, Mississippi, where he continued his education at Pearl McLaurin High School.
Following his graduation from Pearl McLaurin High School in 1971 , Gilbert enlisted into the U.S Navy. He served in the Vietnam War on a supercarrier, USS America. His naval service began in 1971 until his honorable discharge in 1975.
After 1975, Gilbert worked for Ingalls Shipbuilding Inc., Frito-Lay Inc. and Siemens Company. Gilbert’s nature was rebellious, but a gentle soul, who would always put the needs and well-being of others ahead of his own. He cared deeply for his family and friends, and he treated everyone with respect. He was a true patriot, who would have given his heart for his country and for his Navy brothers. He exhibited a true passion for riding bikes across the country, going to the shooting range with his son, researching new technology gadgets, and enjoying a good cup of coffee with his buddies at the local Waffle House.
Along with his parents, Gilbert is preceded by his sister Linda Walski, and his brother David Nowell.
