June 25, 1928 - October 14, 2023
It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we remember and celebrate the life of Sim Watson, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, who passed away peacefully at his home on October 14, 2023. Sim was a man of great character and integrity, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know and love him.
Sim was born in Marion, MS on June 25, 1928, to James Tolbert Watson (1902-1968) and Emma Luvenia "Vennie" Holder Watson (1907-2003). He was raised in a loving family that instilled in him the values of honor, loyalty, faith, and the importance of close family bonds. Sim was preceded in death on November 25, 2020 by his loving and cherished wife and partner in life, Linda “Sharon” Jackson Watson, whom he loved with all of his heart. Married in 1973, Sim and Sharon built a loving home, family, and legacy that will live on in the hearts and lives of all of those who were blessed to know them.
Family and friends were the cornerstone of Sim’s life, and he cherished every moment spent with his loved ones. He had a special place in his heart for his only child, Matthew "Scott" Watson, whom he loved dearly and who took care of him around the clock throughout his final months and days. He was also a loving father and grandfather-in-law to Connie Jenkins Watson and Joshua Jenkins, sharing precious moments and memories with all of his immediate family.
In addition to his son Scott, Sim is survived by his beloved sister, Charity Watson Marlowe, and leaves behind a legacy of love and support to numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and all of his family and friends who will forever hold his memory close. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Julia Watson Nutt, and Peggy Frances Watson Wilkerson, who held a very special place in his heart and whose memory lived on in him all of his life and was a testament to the deep love he felt for her.
Sim Watson proudly served his country as a WWII and Korean War Veteran, displaying unwavering dedication and honor. His service earned him numerous medals and awards, including the WWII Victory Medal, the Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, the United Nations Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He stood as a symbol of honor and sacrifice for all generations to come.
After his military service, Sim worked diligently, first at IBM and then at Genesco, where his passion for work and family were evident by his achievement of the highest sales volume for the entire company, a testament to his dedication and amazing work ethic.
Sim found wonderful joy and camaraderie all of life on the golf course. Playing golf with family and friends was one of his greatest pleasures, especially playing alongside his best friend of over 40 years, John Wright, whom he lost in 2016. These moments of shared laughter and competition enriched his life and the lives of those fortunate enough to tee off with him. One of his favorite memories was shared with his son who made a hole in one on the same course, the same hole where he had made a hole in one almost one year earlier to the day.
Sim’s presence in our lives was a gift that will be cherished and remembered for generations to come. His strength, kindness, and love for his family and friends will remain an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him. Sim’s legacy is one of honor, service, and above all, love.
As we bid our final farewell, let us remember Sim for the remarkable man he was, and may his memory live on in the hearts of all those who loved him.
