Gladys Chunn Bryant, affectionately known as “Gma,” passed peacefully on the morning of Saturday, December 6, 2025, at the age of 91. Born in Huntsville, Alabama, on May 23, 1934, to Sarah Rebecca Chunn, she was lovingly raised by her maternal grandparents along with their six children.
Gma’s life was a remarkable testament to faith, family, and resilience. She graduated from Council Training High School in Normal, Alabama, where she was a cheerleader, sang in the school choir, and was crowned the 1951 Homecoming Queen. The first in her family to attend college, Gma earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Alabama A&M. She devoted over 33 years to teaching first through fifth grade, special education, and reading in the school districts of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Kansas City, Missouri, impacting thousands of young lives. Later, she settled in Pearland, Texas, where she enjoyed a well-deserved and fulfilling retirement.
A single mother of seven, Gma took immense pride in her children’s achievements, cherishing the legacy of her family tree! She found joy in journaling and reading her Bible daily and remained a proud and active member of her church at the time of her passing. Her home was a reflection of her vibrant personality, filled with handwritten notes, inspirational quotes, Bible verses, cherished photographs, beloved books, puzzles, and thriving plants—each one representing her favorite things.
Gma was preceded in death by her grandparents, Baker Chunn and Hickmon Tyler Chunn, her mother, Sarah Rebecca Chunn, and her sister, Bessie Lee Rice. She is survived by her loving children: Kamau Cedric McCauley (Los Angeles, CA), Jan McCauley Burton (Kansas City, KS), Mark Aubrey McCauley and his wife Shirley (Memphis, TN), Timothy McCauley and his wife Vicki (Kansas City, KS), Aleta Bryant Stampley (McKinney, TX), Christopher DeChunn Bryant and his wife Traci (Lee’s Summit, MO), and Harelda Gladette Bryant (Pearland, TX). She also leaves behind sixteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and many more family members and friends who will continue to honor her legacy and remember her love.
