

Born August 20, 1928 in York Township, Carroll County to Clarence L. and Cecil P. (Benedict) Johnson, she married Floyd Hicks on August 14, 1953 in East Peoria. He died April 24, 2004 in Peoria. She also was preceded in death by her parents; one infant son, Dennis Floyd Hicks; three brothers and two sisters.
Surviving are one daughter, Debra Diane (Harold, Sr.) Smith of Goofy Ridge; one son, Dale F. (Tammy) Hicks of Pekin; two grandsons, D.J. Hicks and Drew Hicks both of Pekin; one brother, Walter (Laura) Johnson of El Paso and one sister, Lucille (Bud) Cave of Grand Ridge. She also leaves Jason, whom she was proud to have raised from infancy until he was a young man.
Dorothy worked for Murison Label in Peoria, which later became International Paper, as a floor supervisor for more than 20 years. She then worked with her husband, who owned and operated Floyd’s Shell in Pekin, as the bookkeeper for another 20 years before retiring.
She enjoyed making arts and crafts and was known for her good cooking. She also liked to play cards. In earlier years, she and her sister, Flo, sang professionally and even recorded a record.
Dorothy was of the Baptist faith.
Her funeral will be at noon Thursday, August 21, 2008 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Doug Hicks will officiate. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fon du Lac Cemetery in East Peoria.
