Edward E Hoffman

MAPLETON ~ Edward Earl Hoffman, 76, of Mapleton, passed away at 6 a.m. Saturday, December 22, 2018 at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria.

Born April 5, 1942 in Louisiana, Missouri to Roland Earl and Marjorie Ann (Zook) Hoffman, he married Joanne F. Gebhardt on March 17, 1979 in Mossville. She survives.

Also surviving are his mother of Eureka, formerly of Congerville; his children, Dora (Jim) Hoffman, Rebecca Hoffman, Effie Hoffman and Parnell Hoffman, all of Chillicothe, David (Debbie) Thurman of Metamora, and Paul (Lori) Thurman of Morton; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Suzanne (Ron) Gustin of Washington and Diane (Steve) Birky of Danville; and one brother, Jim (Portia) Hoffman of Washington.

He was preceded in death by his father and one son.

Edward had served in the United States Navy as a jet engine mechanic on the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga.

He was a member and an elder of the First Christian Church in Peoria.

He had worked as a machine repairman for Caterpillar, Inc. for 30 years, retiring in 1994.

He had a heart for serving others and had volunteered at the Habitat for Humanity in Peoria, the Midwest Food Bank, and Wildlife Prairie Park and in several capacities for his church.

He was a lifetime member of the American Motorcycle Association. He also enjoyed bowling, stock car racing and had played hockey.

His memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 5, 2019 at First Christian Church in Peoria. Pastor Karen Merrick will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, January 4, 2019 at the church. Additional visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Military honors will be provided by the United States Navy following the memorial service at the church. Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin is assisting the family with arrangements.
