

KIRKLAND ~ Fern M. Meyer, 92, of Kirkland, died on Tuesday, March 12, 2013. She was born February 23, 1921 in Belvidere, Illinois, a daughter of Edward and Achsah Smith. She attended Belvidere schools and resided in Boone County until she moved to Kirkland to marry Frederick W. Meyer on January 19, 1946. He preceded her in death on August 1, 1997 in Kirkland.
Survivors include her daughters, Alice Rogers of Shiner, Texas and Doris (Roger) Pontifex of Champaign, Illinois; one sister, Verna Young of Belvidere and one brother, Edward Smith of Cherry Valley.
Fern farmed in the Kirkland area. She enjoyed sewing, mending and making clothing alterations.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Kirkland, Ruth Circle, Dekalb County Home Extension and Kishwaukee Quilters. She received the Outstanding Citizen Award sponsored by the Kirkland Lions Club in 1999.
Her funeral will be at Olson Funeral & Cremation Services, Ltd. Quiram Kirkland Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maple Cemetery in Kirkland. Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
