At 1 p.m. that same day, family and friends will gather at Fowler Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Blountsville, Alabama for the gravesites committal service. Dr. Daven Watkins, Rev. Beth was born in Blountsville, Alabama on December 5, 1955. She was the fifth of eight children born to James and Vera McHan. She grew up with six brothers and a sister, so she was well versed in how to work and get along with people. She also had a "special" sister that she loved as one of the family.
Beth lived in Alabaster, Alabama with her beloved husband Harry Dean Horton until his death on June 15, 2021. Her son, Jonathan, left this earth at the age of 20 and has been waiting on his mom since 2011. What a reunion they must be having!
Beth loved Harry’s son and daughter and their four children as her own. Snoop was blessed with so much love and devotion.
Beth graduated from J.B. Pennington High School in Blountsville and went to work for a local bank right out of High School. From there, she worked various jobs honing her skills as an accountant until she landed at Johnson-Locklin & Associates in 1984. She worked for them and Assured Partners until her retirement in 2019. Beth was also co-owner of B&H Construction with Harry.
In 1989, Beth became a member of the Preceptor Alpha Mu chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, where she established meaningful relationships and close friends. The sisters have been such a strong support system for Beth and Harry during their trials of sickness and isolation.
Beth is a member of First Baptist Church of Pelham, Alabama, where the members and staff have welcomed her and Harry as family and loved and supported them through so many times of trial and suffering.
Beth is preceded in death by her husband, Harry Dean Horton; her son, Jonathan “Sully” Sullivan; her dad, James McHan; and her mom, Vera McHan.
Survivors include Beth's son, Brandon Horton (Jeannie), and daughter, Kim Horton Powell (Lee); grandchildren, Adam Edwards, Kayden Powell, Kamryn Powell, and Jace Powell; brothers and sister, Bobby McHan (Lynn), Jimmy McHan (Rita), Gary McHan (Sheila), Donna Martin (Dennis), Phillip McHan (Kathy), Jerry McHan (Brenda), and Terry McHan (Annette); and special sister, Annie Sutherland Underwood.
Beth also leaves behind a huge number of nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss her beautiful smile and positive outlook. As daughter Kim remarked, “[Beth] was a pillar of strength and grace.”
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made in Beth’s memory and designated for the “Jonathan ‘Sully' Sullivan Memorial Scholarship” at the University of Alabama. Gifts may be mailed to The Crimson Tide Foundation, 920 Paul W. Bryant Drive, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401.
