March 21, 1934 - Sept. 23, 2014 Billie Jean Arthur Phillips, 80, of Birmingham, AL, passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday, September 23, 2014 in the early morning hours. Ms. Phillips was a much loved English instructor at Jefferson State Community College from its opening in 1965 until her retirement in 1996. She also taught English at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. Before Ms. Phillips began her college teaching career, she taught English, Speech, and debate team classes, and she helped students with all aspects of the yearbook in the Birmingham City School System. She will be dearly missed by all of the thousands of students whose lives she touched in such a special way. Ms. Phillips was a long-time member of The Cathedral Church of the Advent. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Miriam Christine Phillips of Birmingham. Graveside services are planned for Saturday, September 27, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Jefferson Memorial Gardens East in Trussville, AL.
