

Dr. Daniel John Macey, 81, of Vestavia Hills, Alabama passed away Tuesday, January 10, 2023. His family will greet friends Monday, January 16, 2023 at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama from 12 noon to 1 p.m., immediately followed by A Service of Remembrance at 1 p.m. at the funeral home, 475 Cahaba Valley Road, Pelham, AL 35124. Burial will be at Southern Heritage Cemetery, Pelham, and will be followed by refreshments for everyone at the funeral home's Celebration of Life Suite.
"Dan" was born in Kalimpong, India on March 1, 1941. He came to England in the late 1950's and graduated from the University of Surrey, United Kingdom with a Doctor of Nuclear Physics Degree, and earned certification from the American Board of Radiology in all three specialties of medical physics - Therapeutic, Diagnostic, and Nuclear Medicine. Dan was a member of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM).
His professional career in Medical Physics was with Churchill Hospital in Oxford, England; the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada; the University of California at Davis, Sacramento; MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas; and later with the University of Alabama, Birmingham. In addition, he completed locum work in New Hampshire, Florida, New Orleans, Seattle, Eureka, Memphis, Tennessee, Laurel, Maryland, Fredericksburg, Virginia, and Washington D.C. He taught Radiology to medical students, and was an advisor to Masters and Ph.D. students who went on to become AAPM president or innovators in the field. Dan authored and co-authored more than 50 publications, including primer Task Group (TG)#7.
He will be remembered by family and friends as an extremely self-driven and focused individual whose special interests in life were all things science and fixing things. He knew how to put things together without reading manuals.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Laidlaw Macey and Margaret Kawash Macey, and brother, Malcolm Macey. Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Hilda Macey, retired attorney of 30 years to whom he was married on December 16, 1972. Also surviving are Dan's son, Nathaniel John Macey, also a medical physicist; daughter, Rowan Georgina Macey, a doctoral candidate in social work; daughter, Bridget Rose Macey, who holds two associate degrees in liberal arts and medical office administration; two sisters, Maureen Wright of England and Sheila Nongrum of India; nephews, Manny and Josh Wright, and Derek Macey; niece, Nikita Wright Loring; and sister-in-law, Cathy Macey.
