

David graduated from Ramsay High School before earning his Bachelor of Mathematics in 1967 and his Master of Information Science in 1969 at Georgia Tech. His professional career included work as Director of Statistical Methodology at South Central Bell (later BellSouth) from 1969 to 2002. He did public speaking and teaching throughout the US, including two years as Professor of Statistics at Samford University from 2002 to 2004. His invention, a statistical method called “Laney p prime” (p’) charts for large sample sizes, is used in major statistical packages worldwide.
David was very close to his sons, their wives and his grandchildren. He inspired his family to enjoy math and academics while also working hard.
David was predeceased by his wife, Helen Dudley Vines Laney, who died in January 2020, and his parents, Emma Joyce Henson Laney and Cecil Dewey Laney.
Survivors include two sons, Christopher David Laney (Rebecca Mackay Laney) of Hoover and Michael Dudley Laney (Paula Chandler-Laney) of Indian Springs Village; and five grandchildren, Alexander David Laney, Sarah Anne Laney, Katherine Elizabeth Laney, Samuel Chandler Laney, and Connor Patrick Laney.
The family will greet friends on Sunday, December 5 from 1-2 p.m. at Southern Heritage Funeral Home, 475 Cahaba Valley Road, Pelham, AL 35124. A brief service will follow at 2 p.m.
