

Her memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, January 20, 2018, at St. Marks United Methodist Church, 400 Grants Ferry Road in Brandon, MS, with the Rev. Gary Knight and Sandra Thomas officiating. Visitation will precede the service beginning at noon at the church. Interment will be beside her loving husband at Lakewood Memorial Park in Clinton, MS.
Doris was born September 25, 1917 in Reading, PA to Howard E. and Carrie Mabel (Schaeffer) Brown. She and her husband resided in Berkley, MI; Joplin, MO; Jackson, MS and Brandon, MS before she moved to the retirement community in Alabama at age 97.
A graduate of Reading High School, Doris was one of the first to become a certified Medical Secretary in the State of Mississippi. For over 15 years she served as a Medical Secretary for the Audiology Department at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson before retiring in 1979.
She was pre-deceased by her husband Frederick J. Balmer, Jr. her parents, her siblings and her dear daughter-in-law Patricia (Tricia) Breeden Balmer. She is survived by two children: Nancy Miller (E. Ray Miller) of Hoover, AL; her son Thomas Balmer, Sr. of Terry, MS; her four grandchildren, Blake Miller (Nikki) of Hoover, AL; Jed Miller of Seattle, WA.; Thomas Balmer, Jr. (Keisha) of Judsonia, AR; Brittany Ingram (James) of Byram, MS, and six great-grandchildren: Caden Miller, Ethan Miller, Tanner Balmer, Kaleb Gatewood, Alexander Ingram and Remington Balmer.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the St. Marks United Methodist Church of Brandon, MS.
