Grace Martin Wammack, 95, of Vestavia Hills, Alabama, died peacefully on September 20, 2017 surrounded by family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Carroll Wammack, with whom she eagerly awaited being reunited, and her half- sister, Mildred Dennis. She is survived by her children Dennis (Dianne) Wammack, Linda (Thomas) Willingham, and Michael (Wendy) Wammack; beloved grandchildren Mark Willingham, Leigh Ann (Andrew) Herron, Jennifer Wammack, Catherine (Jeffrey) Solomon, Joseph Wammack, and Sarah Wammack; and beloved great-grandchildren Ethan Willingham, Eli Willingham, Emerson Willingham, Madeline Herron, and Alexandra Herron.
Grace was fortunate to have traveled extensively, across three continents, with her husband, children, and church and college groups. She was invariably at the head of every tour group and always in awe of nature’s beauty.
Grace was strengthened by her faith in Jesus Christ. She was an active and devout member of Shades Mountain Baptist Church which she attended for 46 years, and saw grow through three sanctuaries.
Grace and Carroll opened Mountain Plaza Cleaners in 1979. Their customers became Graces’ extended family. She rejoiced in their triumphs and suffered with them during troubled times. She reluctantly retired in 2013 at the age of 91. At 92, Grace underwent chemotherapy and was rewarded with an additional two years of life’s joys.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests you find a quiet time to reflect on Grace’s core belief- “love one another” and to consider deepening this commitment in your own life.
A memorial service will be held Noon Saturday, September 23, 2017 at the Shades MountainBaptist Church chapel. The family looks forward to receiving friends starting at 11:00 A.M. prior to the service.
Selflessness, strength, beauty, humility, perseverance, unwavering faith only begin to describe Grace. The positive influence she has had upon others is immeasurable and will last a hundred years. Let us rejoice in her life.
