Ida Eleanor Powers Pulliam passed away on August 25, 2020. Born in Birmingham, Alabama on February 5, 1940, she was the only child of Robert E. Powers (Calera, Alabama) and Lily Sullivan Powers (Hillsboro, New Mexico). Ida’s husband, Maxwell H. Pulliam Sr., predeceased her in 1974.
Ida is survived by her three children and their spouses: Max and Teresa; Connie and Buzz; and Scott and Stacy. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Nick, Rob, Alice Jordan, and Chandler, as well as two great-grandchildren, Sadie and Hattie.
Ida grew up in Pelham, Alabama and was educated at the Helena School. She was an excellent student and a cheerleader at Thompson High School. She attended the University of Alabama, and her love and devotion to the Crimson Tide and the University were passionate.
After beginning her work in banking, Ida retired from the Alabama Power Company following 28 years of service. She served her community through many charities, including the Pelham Library Guild and Oak Mountain Missions, among others.
Fair elections were important to Ida. She assisted many people in registering to vote, and she served as a poll worker for almost 20 years. Ida viewed the freedom to vote as the most hard-fought right, and as the most important political right outside of the Bill of Rights.
Ida loved her church, Lakeview (Pelham’s First) United Methodist, and her church family almost as much as her own family. Throughout her life, she was active in United Methodist Women and turned her faith, hope and love into action on behalf of women and children, both locally and around the world.
John Wesley founded Methodism which places a huge value on social justice. Ida lived what Wesley preached: “Do all the good you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways you can. In all the places you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can. As long as ever you can."
Ida will be missed by many. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to Lakeview United Methodist Church in Pelham.
The graveside service for Ida Pulliam will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2020 at Pelham City Cemetery. Rev. Chris Herbert will officiate.
