He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 58 years, Betty; children, Mike and Jill (John Ellis); grandchildren, Christopher (Valerie), John, and Emily; great-grandchildren, Morgan, Braylen, and Cayden; brother-in-law and lifelong friend, Don Isaacs; nephew Robert Isaacs and niece Pam Hill.
JC will be dearly missed by friends near and far, especially his beloved community at the Riverchase Baptist Church. He was predeceased by his parents, Hubert and Mildred Handley; his brother, Paul Handley; and sister, Martha McKay.
After graduating from Tarrant High School, JC served first in the U.S. Army then in the National Guard as a paratrooper. He later graduated from the University of Alabama and worked in a variety of industries before discovering the automotive industry, where he found a way to join his love of cars and people together to make a successful career for more than 35 years. He was beloved by clients throughout the Birmingham area, and he developed lifetime friendships with colleagues and served as a mentor to many.
In retirement, JC enjoyed spending countless hours perfecting their home's lawn and landscape. He also eagerly offered to complete any handy work needed by family or friends, and, recognizing his eagerness to be handy, Betty made sure he never became bored with an always-full "honey-do" list.
Whenever he could, JC spent many joyful hours on the road hauling grandchildren and great-grandchildren for adventures, giving generously of his love, compassion, and silly nature. He treasured spending one-on-one time with old and new friends over coffee, ice cream, or a really good hamburger.
JC was a faithful servant to the Lord and loved their local church and especially their Sunday School class at Riverchase Baptist Church. He taught everyone he knew how to live a content and happy life and his absence will be felt.
A Visitation at 10 a.m. followed by a Service at 11 a.m. will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama. Graveside services will be at Oakwood Memorial Gardens, Gardendale, Alabama.
Memorial Donations may be made in JC Handley’s name to Riverchase Baptist Church, 2020 Crossvine Rd, Birmingham, AL 35244 or online giving: https://www.riverchasebaptist.org/giving.html
