James Cleon Mayfield passed away on Sunday, November 30, 2014. Mr. Mayfield was a decorated veteran of World War II having served in company 328 of the 26 Inf. division in the United States Army. He served as a medic in World War II and saw combat in the Battle of the Bulge and five other battles throughout France, Austria and Germany. He was wounded in combat on January 5, 1945 in Luxembourg. He earned a Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart with Cluster and a Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Mayfield lived a life of service spending 38 years as a distributor of the Birmingham News and Post Herald, as well as manager for Burger King in Vestavia Hills for 10 years. He was also a lifetime member of the Grand Lodge of F.&A.M. as of May 17, 1971.
Mr. Mayfield is preceded in death by his parents, Earnest and Zora Mayfield; in-laws, Charles and Gladys Fant; brothers, Rupert C. Mayfield and Clell I. Mayfield; and grandson, Oliver Ryan Mayfield. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Fant Mayfield; daughter, Loretta M. Rowan; son, James D. Mayfield; grandsons, Justin Mayfield (Suzanne) and Austin Mayfield; brother, Dewey E. Mayfield (Phylis); loving in-laws, step grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.

Taps will be played by Jon Sedlak.
The celebration of Mr. Mayfield’s life will be at 2pm on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at Southern Heritage Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at a visitation one hour prior to the service.
