Jamiel S. Saliba of Hoover, Alabama left this life on Thursday, January 9, 2020 while on business in California. He died suddenly of an apparent heart attack. It was a shock to all of us, but we are so grateful he didn’t have to suffer and that he is now with all of our loved ones who went to their heavenly homes before him, especially our beloved daughter, Jeannie.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. on Friday, January 17, 2020 at First Baptist Church of Pelham, Alabama. A Celebration of Mr. Saliba's Life will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at First Baptist Church of Pelham. Burial will be at Southern Heritage Cemetery, Pelham.
Mr. Saliba was born in Mobile, Alabama but spent most of his early life in Florence, Alabama. He attended Coffee High School and upon graduation went to the University of North Alabama, joining the ROTC program which led to a 23-year career in the U.S. Army until his retirement in 1996, returning to Baumholder, Germany for his son’s graduation from high school there.
Mr. Saliba loved his years in the Army and was a fierce patriot of the United States, following in the footsteps of his father, the late MG James S. Saliba, former Adjutant General for the Alabama National Guard. His awards were a source of pride to all of us and he worked hard to be an example to his “troops” and to his family.
While assigned to Ft. Gordon, Georgia, Mr. Saliba met Ellen Hahn, who was working at Eisenhower Army Medical Center. Their “blind date” led to marriage on September 6, 1975 (the wedding date had to be adjusted so as not to miss a Bama game) and remained together for nearly 45 years. Over the course of his career, they moved 13 times, having had assignments at Ft. Gordon; Vicenza, Italy; Heidelberg, Germany; Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Indiana; Ft. Polk, Louisiana; USA MILPERCEN, Virginia; Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas; back to Heidelberg; Recruiting Command, Montgomery, Alabama; and again Baumholder, Germany, serving in Bosnia. Retirement led him back to Sweet Home Alabama, specifically Birmingham, where he could get as close as possible to the Crimson Tide.
Mr. Saliba then began his “civilian” career in Hoover, which then resulted in over 45 years of global experience in the Human Resources arena. He currently serves as the Senior Global Vice President/General Manager of TAPFIN and oversees how the company leads organizations to develop, deploy and enable an integrated approach to analyzing and managing their external talent. He previously served as Vice President/General Manager of TAPFIN’s Global Operations from October 2004 to October 2014. Prior to that, Mr. Saliba held a variety of positions at Venturi Technology Partners from 1996 to 2004 including Managing Director for the Alabama Office, President for the Southeast Region, and eventually President, Managed Staffing Solutions where he oversaw all MSP and VMS activity.
Mr. Saliba represents Manpower on the Board of Directors for the National Minority Supplier Development Council. He is also a member of the Hoover, Alabama Veterans Committee and a member of the Monday Morning Quarterback Club of Birmingham. This organization has raised over $22 million for Crippled Children’s Foundation and Birmingham Children’s Hospital along with other agencies to support less fortunate children in Alabama. He has been selected as one of top 100 influential people in staffing by Staffing Industry Analyst the past four years.
Mr. Saliba received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of North Alabama and his Master’s in Business Administration from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri.
He was preceded in death by his father, General James S. Saliba; his mother, Ina Mae Saliba; his dear sister, Shauna Saliba Salter; and finally in 2011, his beloved daughter, Jeannie Elizabeth Saliba.
Survivors include Mr. Saliba's wife, Ellen; his son, Jamiel S. Saliba III and fiancé Lesley Langham; son, Jonathan R. Saliba and wife Jennifer Davis Saliba; and grandchildren, Jamiel IV, Marek, Shauna, Jakeb, Jensen, Jonas, Matthew, Angel, and Sam. He was known to all of his grandchildren as “Diddy” and will be greatly missed.
