

He is preceded in death by both of his parents, David and Judy Funk, and his eldest sister, Alison McGill.
Survivors include John's blue nose pit bull, Bra’tac, and cats, Jasmine, Zoe, and Whipper; one sister, Lori Douglas of Irving, Texas; nephews, Alan and Trace McGill of Pelham, Alabama; niece, Claudia McGill of Center Point, Alabama; niece, Cameron Douglas of Dallas, Texas; and nephew, Blake Douglas, currently stationed at Fort George Meade in Maryland.
John graduated from Huffman High School in Birmingham, Alabama in 1981 and received the Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from UAB in 1987. He started his career in structural engineering during college with David Funk & Associates, which later became David Funk Engineering in May 1989.
John was an avid collector of coins, stamps, guns, and knives, but his favorite pastime was billiards. He joined the Birmingham chapter of the American Poolplayers Association (APA) in 1999 and played through 2007 before taking a break. He returned in 2013 and stayed active till his death, calling Poppa G’s his second home. He earned a shot in the 2015 APA 8-Ball Spring Regionals and the 2017 APA 9-Ball World Pool Championship in Las Vegas, Nevada with his team, The Will To Thrill.
A Memorial Gathering for John Funk will be Saturday, May 14, 2022 from 5-7 p.m. at Poppa G’s Billiards Bar and Grill, 2722 Chandalar Place Drive, Pelham, AL 35124.
