IN THE CARE OF

Southern Heritage Funeral Home & Cemetery

CHILDERS, Joseph Robert Jr. “Bob” passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at the age of 71. He was holding hands with his soulmate and caregiver, Cathy, to whom he had been married for 46 years. Their love was one written for the ages. When asked by a friend how long they had been married, Bob simply answered “not long enough.”

Bob grew up in Kissimmee, Florida and moved to Vestavia Hills, Alabama. He graduated from Berry High School in 1968. He was proud of his service in the U.S. Navy, having served aboard the USS Saratoga.

After serving his country, Bob worked at J.R. Childers and Associates. Upon retirement, he and Cathy moved to their lake home, affectionately named “Almost Heaven.”

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Robert Sr. and Virginia Childers. He is survived by his loving wife, Catherine Smith Childers, and his beloved daughter, Carolyn Matthews (Will). He was a proud Papa to his granddaughter, Cadence, with whom he loved sharing his chair, snacks, and building skills. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara Botop (Jay); nephew, Jason Botop (Sherry Lea); and niece, Krista Schueler (Mark). Bob’s chosen family included Don Wolgast (Stephany), Dee Neumann, and Dr. Christine Neumann Stoops (Matt) and their children Ellie and Paul.

The family would like to thank the staff at the UAB Cancer Center at Russell Medical for their love and care. Thanks also to Bob's hospice nurse, Cole, with Encompass Health.

A private celebration of Bob's life will be held in the future.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Cancer Center Patient Assistance Fund, c/o Russell Medical Foundation, ATTN: Tammy Jackson. P.O. Box 939, Alexander City, AL 35011.
