June Williams, age 91, of Hoover, Alabama, died peacefully at her beloved home Sunday, June 20, 2021. “June Bug,” affectionately called by her friends, was born in Calera, Alabama. Her family later relocated to Birmingham, Alabama.
June attended West End High School, where she received her diploma in 1948. Her first job was with the Jefferson County Tax Collectors Office. She worked there as a clerk for 15 years.
June met her future husband, Emmett, through one of her co-workers, Allie Williams. Allie just happened to be Emmett’s mother. June and Emmett were married April 27, 1951. They lived in Irondale, Alabama for five years. In 1956, June and Emmett purchased their first and only home in what is now Hoover.
After 12 years of marriage, June and Emmett decided it was time to start a family. In 1963, they celebrated the birth of their first child, a baby boy they named Scott. A year and a half later, June and Emmett celebrated the birth of their second child, a pretty baby girl they named Sandy. During this time, June was a homemaker and stay-at-home wife. She later went back to work part-time for the Jefferson County and Bessemer Tax Collector offices. Sadly, June lost her beloved Emmett in the Fall of 1981. They had been married for 30 years.
Several years later, June found her second true love, which was volunteer work for the Hoover Senior Center. She was heavily involved with the nutrition program there and enjoyed serving the patrons’ daily lunch. June was most proud of the “100” perfect score that she and the staff received from the health inspector.
The senior center’s manager, Dana Henson, became June’s closest friend and confidant. She loved Dana dearly and thought of her as her second daughter. The staff, along with the patrons and fellow volunteers, became part of June’s extended family. She loved and cherished every last one of them. Her time at the Hoover Senior Center was some of the happiest moments of her entire life.
Besides her volunteer work, June had other interests as well. She loved taking trips, especially to the beach. She also enjoyed her home, spending time with her friends, and of course Alabama football (ROLL TIDE!!).
The past few years were very difficult for June. Her health declined drastically. Although confined to a bed and unable to walk, June always smiled when her friends came to visit. She always enjoyed the pretty flowers they would often bring. Until the very end, June’s son Scott, along with her many friends, never gave up hope that she could somehow get better. Sadly, her frail little body was just too weak and she passed away peacefully in her sleep.
Although this is a sad time, June’s family and all of her wonderful friends can take comfort in knowing that our little “June Bug” is at peace and out of pain. She is now with the angels. Anyone who ever met or came into contact with her is a better person for doing so. Nobody will ever love or miss June more that her son, Scott.
June is survived by her son, Scott Williams of Hoover, and her daughter, Sandy Williams of Boca Raton, Florida.
June is preceded in death by her husband, Emmett Williams; her mother, Edna Houlditch; father, Will Houlditch; sister, Mary Kate Houlditch; and one grandson, Donnie Roberson.
A celebration of June’s wonderful life will be Tuesday, June 29, 2021 at Ridout’s Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama, beginning with visitation from 12 noon to 1 p.m. and followed by A Service of Remembrance at 1 p.m. at the funeral home’s chapel. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery, Birmingham.
