OBITUARY

Marshall Ernest Smith III

21 September, 1947 – 22 August, 2024
IN THE CARE OF

Southern Heritage Funeral Home & Cemetery

It is with great sadness that the family of Marshall Ernest Smith, III announces his passing on August 22, 2024, at the age of 76. Mike will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 46 years, Janice Bright Smith; their children, Megan Thomas (Scott), Michelle Tindal (Lee), and Michael Gentry (Ashley); as well as his eight grandchildren, Matthew, Justin (Rose), Alex, Morgan, Bella, Livia, Cael, and Eden.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Marshall Ernest Smith and Carol Conner Smith, as well as brother-in-law, Carl P. Parsons, Jr. Surviving family members include his brother, Shawn Smith (Debbie), and sisters, Susan Parsons (Buddy) and Paige Wright (Steve).

His partners in crime include Steve Chapman, Marc Booth, and Frank Hanson (law partner). Boy do they have stories to tell!

Mike graduated from Samford University, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. From there, he served in the United States Air Force. After leaving the military, Mike attended Birmingham School of Law and graduated first in his class in 1974. He lived a life of public service for more than 50 years. He served as City Clerk of Mountain Brook and later a partner of Smith and Hanson Law Firm until the time of his passing.

For those who know Mike well, you will remember just how athletic he was. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t do, be it wrestling, lifeguarding, scuba diving, golfing, race car driving, or sailing. His fish tales grew by the day, but there was an ounce of truth in each of them. Mike was the life of every party and brought a smile and a hearty laugh to all.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Compassus Hospice and their staff, but most especially Shelli Cuppett.

Per Mike’s request, no services will be held. Please continue to hold our family in your thoughts and prayers.
