

Philip Edward Creamer of Hoover, AL, age 79, passed from this life on Thursday, 7/14/11, after a long illness. Phil was born in Calais, ME in 1931. During WWII he volunteered with the Ground Observation Corps in Eastport, ME, between 1942-44 to lookout for German aircraft and was later active as a Boy Scout. He followed his father into the Anchor Lodge of the Knights of Pythias. “Philly” graduated with the Shead High School Class of 1949. He enlisted in the U.S. Army after the outbreak of the Korean War and requested jump school. He served with the 508th Airborne Regimental Combat Team (“Red Devils”) garrisoned at Ft. Benning. During this time he was selected for combat medic training and also completed the Personnel Administrative Course at Ft. Benjamin Harrison. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant in Medical Company. He wedded Virginia Ruth Johnson of Louisville, AL, in 1953, who stood at his side the remainder of his life, with the last 37 years in Hoover. Early in his career with Vulcan Materials Company as the office clerk at the Barin Plant in Columbus, GA, he joined the Muscogee County Exchange Club and served several terms as treasurer. A lifelong Episcopalian, he served as an altar boy for Christ Episcopal Church in Eastport and several years as warden and lay reader for the Church of the Resurrection in Phenix City, AL. He also served as a troop scoutmaster in the Boy Scouts for several years in the Chattahoochee Area Council (GA/AL). After several relocations with Vulcan Materials Company, he retired in 1990 from the Birmingham corporate office as an executive assistant with 33 years company service. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Alfred Creamer and Marion Aldora McCracken. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Virginia, son Glenn Edward Creamer (Rebecca) of Hoover, sister Shirley (Jim) Spinney of Eastport, ME, and nephews Ronald (Elaine) Spinney of Eastport, Roger (Annie) Spinney of Amhurst, NH, and Robert (Trica) Spinney of Westbrook, ME. Phil loved his church, his family, his country, animals, the outdoors, and his home town of Eastport. The family is grateful to Jeanette McDonald for the faithfulness and care she provided Philip. A memorial service will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, Vestavia Hills, AL, on Tuesday, 7/19/11 at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be at Salem Baptist Church cemetery, Ariton, AL on Wednesday, 7/20/11 at 11:00 a.m.
